maybe the most transitional year in the dead history... neither here nor there, just the "BAR BAND ERA", not my words, maybe jerry's.

rarely exciting on paper. too many NFA's... pigpen was in and out, they were just a quartet hammering away at... SOMETHING. lucky for The Grateful Dead that KEITH GODCHAUX came along.... amazingly his enrollment in the group propelled them forward -- at last, melodic and harmonic possibilities flowered. the music opened up and a new, deeper, soulful VISIONARY element was born.

knowing that this was right around the bend, it makes this seemingly MUNDANE YEAR all the more provocative. there are MANY GEMS in '71, interspersed with MANY PLAIN JANE performances. they are on the cusp all year.... but it takes a piano player to make the band -- they took off like a rocket on 10/19/71 and headed for deep space....... fun to check them out in CEHVY MODE before the launch, indeed.
